Introduction
St. Lucie Public Schools is proud to provide equitable access to quality instructional materials to support the teaching and learning of the Florida Standards. St. Lucie Public Schools facilitates instructional materials purchases for core subjects.

Florida statute (1006.28) provides our guidelines for the duties of our school district regarding K-12 instructional materials.

The district school board has the constitutional duty and responsibility to select and provide adequate instructional materials for all students in accordance with the following requirements. The term “adequate instructional materials” means a sufficient number of student or site licenses or sets of materials that are available in bound, unbound, kit, or package form and may consist of hardbacked or softbacked textbooks, electronic content, consumables, learning laboratories, manipulatives, electronic media, and computer courseware or software that serve as the basis for instruction for each student in the core subject areas of mathematics, language arts, social studies, science, reading, and literature.

SLPS is a closed district for instructional materials adoption. SLPS follows the FLDOE instructional materials adoption timeline. When the FLDOE begins the current adoption cycle, vendors may not communicate with SLPS employees about their prospective adoption materials.

The Florida Commissioner of Education determines annually the areas in which instructional materials shall be submitted for adoption and evaluates them pursuant to law. The Florida Instructional Materials Department coordinates the Florida Adoption process. Each year, the Florida Instructional Materials Department approve titles for specific courses within a subject area or areas. The subject areas adopted rotate over a course of five years to ensure that all subject areas have current instructional materials. Below is the current adoption schedule.

State Information

The Florida adoption process begins with an announcement of the specifications for adoption and publication of materials. Specifications are based on Florida Statutory requirements for instructional materials and center on content, presentation, and learning strategies. Most, but not all, submitted instructional materials are provided in print and digital or electronic format. Announcements, specifications, processes and procedures, and reports are published at the website below:

Teachers throughout Florida review the titles submitted by publishers against specifications develop. This in-depth review takes several months to complete. Review results are compiled and all titles that meet the specifications are included on the list of Adopted Materials.

The Florida DOE enters into a contract with each publisher on the list of Adopted Materials to provide the exact title approved to Florida School Districts for a period of time, usually five years.

St. Lucie Public Schools' Process

St. Lucie Public Schools' Adoption process involves a digital review of the texts with a completion of an evaluation rubric for each series. Through this Canvas Course, teachers and community members are able to access each publisher's information and rate each program. The evaluation rubric is embedded into each Canvas page.

Schools must have at least 1 and up to 6 school representatives to review the digital texts. School administrators need to submit the names of their committee through the form provided.

As a school representative, reviewers need to complete the following:

Read through the B.E.S.T. standards for your grade level (available in the B.E.S.T. Course Description/Standards tab).
Watch the video about the design of the B.E.S.T. standards (available in the B.E.S.T. Standards Overview tab).
Read through the Evaluation Rubric.
Enter the textbook portal for your grade level.
Complete the evaluations for each publisher within your grade band (K-5; 6-8; 9-12).

B.E.S.T. Course Description/Standards

Course Descriptions and the B.E.S.T. Instructional Guides for Mathematics (B1G-M) assist educators with planning for student learning and instruction aligned to Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics. These guides are designed to aid high-quality instruction through the identification of components that support the teaching and learning of the B.E.S.T. Mathematics standards and benchmarks. These guides include an analysis of information related to the B.E.S.T. Standards within each course, the instructional emphasis and aligned resources. The B1G-M includes an analysis of information related to the B.E.S.T. Standards within each specific mathematics course, the instructional emphasis and aligned resources. The B1G-M was created in collaboration with educational stakeholders across the state of Florida. Each of these guides will serve as a foundation to professional development prior to implementation in the 2022-2023 school year. Please note that the instructional support guides will be released spring 2021 and will continue to undergo edits as necessary. The Instructional Guidance for Transition document is grade-level/course specific and is a snapshot of the upcoming changes.
